The 4th Annual SALISMANIA.com Best Book of the Year Award 2019 goes to...

WINNER - RANDOM SUBTERRANEAN MOSAIC 2012 - 2018 (Sabarna Roy)

PUBLISHER: Leadstart Publishing Pvt Ltd

ABOUT THE BOOK

Roy's Frosted Glass did very well in the market. His Pentacles and Winter Poems did so well that Amazon Audible converted them into Audiobooks by the Australian young jazz singer, Colin Newcomer. Abyss was on the bestseller list at the Oxford Bookstore at the Kolkata Book Fair in 2014. Random Subterranean Mosaic: 2012–2018 is a kaleidoscope of random, yet mysteriously structured to a pattern, fiction, semi-autobiographical, and autobiographical pieces, covering poems, short-shorts, opinions, observations, and conversations. Roy says: “All my life I have struggled to achieve an optimal lucidity in language and expression that is required to demystify the hidden self and selves and agendas. I hope I have achieved this in a large measure in this fifth book of mine!"

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Sabarna Roy is the author of four books: Pentacles, Frosted Glass, Abyss, and Winter Poems. A civil engineer by profession (he passed out from Jadavpur University in 1988), Roy spends his time on books, music, movies, and international television series, when he is not writing or at work in an engineering-manufacturing organization in Kolkata. With no love for pets or gardening (although he loves forests and wildlife) or socializing, and a lot of time for introspection and deep (and not-so-deep!) thinking, Roy’s works reflect his views on the global order and individuals striving to find their place in it.

2nd - FRIENDS AND FIVE SEASONS VOL 1 (Madhukant Acharya)

PUBLISHER: Notion Press

ABOUT THE BOOK

Rupen, Dinkar, and Ajit passed out from an English medium school in 1921 and recalled their outstanding teachers Charles Benedict, Colonel Irwin Manley, Julie Thomas, Gyan Shastri, Suman Sahay, and others. Standing on the threshold of adulthood, they joined college and did what they always wanted to do - they revolted against the British flag and dumped it into the Ganges as a non-violent act of defiance. As a result, they were pitted against Principal Andrews who was determined to teach them a lesson that would make an example out of the three; but they were ably defended by Professor Saran who believed in using his brains to secure a pardon for his students.

In such a tense atmosphere, Radha comes into Rupen's life and so does Julie, who defends Ajit. Meanwhile, Dinkar fearlessly faces the authorities. Sensing the popular mood in the country, the three friends undertake a journey of discovery of India and start writing articles supported by a former newspaper editor.

Despite huge odds, they cruise into their careers. Rupen joins a small newspaper group rejecting a lucrative offer from a leading paper. Ajit takes up the practice of law. Dinkar joins the King's service. In this situation, they make a pact that not too far into the future their careers will merge in the city of their school days and that they will share a common destiny. But how this would happen, none of them knew..

3rd - FRIENDS AND FIVE SEASONS VOL 2 (Madhukant Acharya)

PUBLISHER: Notion Press

ABOUT THE BOOK:

Rupen, Dinkar, and Ajit redeemed their pledge to work in the provincial city of their school days. By the sheer force of Rupen’s formidable reputation as an outstanding Editor of the World Chronicle and Vishwadesh newspapers in Calcutta, he came to the notice of the Emperor who picked him to revive his defunct newspaper. Rupen accepted and acted quickly by asking Dinkar to leave the King’s service and join him. Ajit left Calcutta to start his law firm in Patna and became the Chief Counsel of Dolphin newspapers run by Rupen. Steadfastly they sprinted towards their goals where duty above all else ruled their lives.

In 1959 Rupen interviewed JFK, President of the United States in the Oval Office at the White House which was globally reported in the media. Ajit meanwhile successfully fought the cases for Dolphin Papers in the High Court and Supreme Court and became a legal eagle par excellence. Dinkar cleared the hurdles as an ace administrator to push the newspapers ascent to the top. The three friends were a force to reckon with. Just then the Prime Minister wanted Rupen to mentor his young daughter being groomed to lead the party and the government.

Julie Thomas and Radha Thakur were the new age modern women of an emancipated India cutting through the iron wall of a patriarchal society while still retaining strong family bonds. One was a distinguished educationist and entrepreneur and the other a successful agrarian manager and homemaker. Both chartered out on independent careers that other women had not done before. They had all lived through the four seasons together and then the fifth season arrived. That changed everything forever.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Sunil is a rising unknown in the habitat of Indian writing, waiting for readers to sample his work. His style of using simple language to convey the most complex of ideas, beauty and emotions has the rare quality of being able to tickle your brain and move you at the same time.

An eclectic background consisting of education as an engineer and a postgraduate in forestry followed by a dreary day job in contracts to pay the bills, besides interesting hobbies and a keen eye for beauty residing in the ordinary, serves as fodder for his poetry.

Sunil loves long, silent walks and the company of trees, dogs, birds, spiders and everything wild. He is truly amateur at everything he enjoys, be it birding, driving, photography, reading or writing. He was born by the sea in Kerala and now resides in Delhi.

"What goes into a Butterfly?", a collection of poems is Sunil's first book. It was included by the Deccan Herald as one of the "Titles to consider" in March 2019. That is a significant achievement and stepping stone, considering that it was the lone poetry work sitting alongside Fiction titles from leading publishers.

9th - THE LADY IN WHITE (Sanchita Bhattacharya)

PUBLISHER: Notion Press

ABOUT THE BOOK:

Anecdotal accounts and human behavior have always fascinated the author from an early age. The book is a compilation of such stories, having diverse backdrops and complexity in terms of various characters.

Life, as we know it, is neither black or white. It has an array of grey shades, dwelling in between the 'right' and the 'wrong'. The dichotomy of situations and responses of common people is the essence of this compilation. The reactions are measured up in the stories. They can be considered humorous, surreal, mundane and even tragic. The stories have not followed any fixed or pre-ordained pattern. They have evolved with each experience of the author, or of various other stimuli as observed and experienced by her. The characters are known and unknown, depending on the understanding of readers. They can decide whether justice has been meted by the creator or not!

10th - THE TEMPLE STOP (Harinder Cheema)

PUBLISHER: Blue Rose Publishers

ABOUT THE BOOK:

The Temple Stop is not just a story of love and romance. It is a story of all those soldiers who have sacrificed their lives in the service of the nation.

A story of their helpless families who are forced to live a life of poverty and oblivion waiting for some divine intervention. It is also a social commentary on the evils prevailing in the society.

But nowhere are the social messages forced on the readers. The treatment is very subtle. The story has a natural flow like that of a river and the messages are like the silt it carries along its course which helps make the land fertile and rich.

The author intends to do the same to the minds of my readers. The novel also boasts of a novelty and that is the introduction of poetry in contemporary fiction.

The book starts with a poem and ends with a poem. Throughout the story, she has expressed strong emotional scenes through poetic verses.

The style is simple, the language colloquial but it is the profundity of thought and some soul searching poetry that makes The Temple Stop a rich work of literature.
