"Living my life on my terms is my biggest achievement" - Tannaaz Irani [ Author Interview

The author Tannaaz Irani was always enamored by languages and arts. After a convent education at St. Agnes’ High School, she went on to study B.A. in Psychology and Sociology at St. Xavier’s College and followed it with a degree in law. Tannaaz spent two years in the corporate world which she left when Motherhood beckoned. A hands-on Mom Tannaaz never gave up her passion for reading, and perused a number of genres; this voracious appetite for reading has moulded her attitudes and her world-view.

As the children grew she started writing her own blog www.tanus-corner.com. This spurred her on to first do editing and she is now a partner at Creative Crows Publishers LLP. “Goodness Gracious Grandmama” is her first full-length book, written as a memoir.

Being naturally witty and satirical, she has maintained a similar tone through the book. Though Tannaaz sets store by hard work and integrity she likes to maintain a work-life balance. She lives in Mumbai with her mother, husband, and children.

Q. Characterize yourself in one word?

Q. Please describe what the story/book is about in one sentence.

The book is a hilarious take on my idiosyncratic Grandmother with an attempt to analyse her behaviour and that of people around her.

Q. Briefly, what led up to this book? What were you writing (and getting published, if applicable) before breaking out with this book?

I had a desire to write about my Grandmother for a very long time, and one day I just put it all down and the thoughts began to flow. My Grandmother was a very principled lady, elegant and cultured; and though I was a little scared of her as a child, upon growing I learnt that she was a good woman; and I began to view her seemingly absurd antics with a humorous eye. After I grew up I found myself mimicking her in several ways: her lifestyle, appreciating what she loved and I tried hard to be like her. I also realised as the years flew by that I am what I am because of her influence on my own Mother. In a way it was an attempt to hand her down to posterity, to commemorate her.

Q. What has been your biggest achievement?

Living my life on my terms... I have always done as I pleased, and I continue to do so without ruffling too many feathers. The ability to do what my mind tells me is the right thing, is, I would say my greatest achievement.

Q. Looking back, what did you do right that helped you break in?

I never deviated from what I believed was right, and I have always conducted myself in a disciplined manner, I have kept my eyes and ears open and taken opportunities as they happened. I went with the flow, doing what I do best; and here I am!

Q. Did you have a platform in place? On this topic, what are you doing to build a platform and gain readership?

The world is my platform really, in the age of social media. To build a market, be it an audience, readership or anything else, one needs to keep one's wits about one, remain alert for opportunities; and while on opportunities, I would say thinking on one's feet and making lightning decisions builds any enterprise - be it, in my case, writing or publishing. Visibility is another crucial factor in creating markets... once you are visible and articulate your work will speak for you.

Q. Favorite novel?

That is a no brainer- Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen... with its quaint old world charm and subtle humour.

Q. Something personal about you people may be surprised to know?

I like to keep to myself when I am not at work.

Q. What’s next?

Building my publishing house Creative Crows Publishers LLP that I head and run with Ganiv Panjrath, my Partner. We share a vision and are striving to realise it. Personally, I am working on a book on the Millennial Generation and Gen Z, which though research-based, reads like a fun book and is aimed at the Youth, Emerging Adults and the soon to be Establishment and Guardians of society.

Q. Future of SALISMANIA.com through your eyes?

I think you guys are doing wonderfully well; showing the Enterprise and will to work that typifies Gen Y and Gen Z. You are poised to go places. SALISMANIA.com is just the beginning; there is a lot to be done and I feel certain you will make your mark.
