Q. Characterize yourself in one word?

Q. Please describe what the story/book is about in one sentence.

My novel ‘The Unknown Realm- War and Beyond’ is a young adult action and adventure packed science fiction fantasy novel with many sub plots woven together in a backdrop of war, providing the story with endless possibilities and much suspense and mystery, an attempt at understanding the harms of blind perceptions, the mechanisms of society and its failure to operate under crisis, with different kinds of individuals trying to restore order, in a realm so different, yet so alike our own.

Q. Briefly, what led up to this book? What were you writing (and getting published, if applicable) before breaking out with this book?

I began the journey three years ago when I was in 7th grade. Discussions about the other world and the cycle of rebirth during one of my classes led me to think. The plot started developing in my mind and one fine day, I started putting my thoughts onto paper. Never thought that it will emerge as a book but with each page, the story and the plot thickened, the characters strengthened, parental support and encouragement came in and my debut book was created. I have been writing poetry too since last few years.

Q. What has been your biggest achievement?

My most significant achievement so far has been my book and the appreciation it has gathered. In fact, it gave me an immense feeling of accomplishment when my father, despite being an absolute non-reader, read the book in one go and I saw the admiration in his eyes. That moment, I will cherish for my life.

Q. Looking back, what did you do right that helped you break in?

Writing comes with its own challenges. The journey of creative expression has its own ups and downs. There are times when you want to write but the words will fail you. Also, with the busy schedules, you might feel frustrated for not being able to write as much as you want. You can have your usual writer’s block putting you down. And then comes the challenges around submissions and acceptance of your manuscript. But it all fell in place because I and my family believed in my capability as a story teller; I did not lose hope and definitely did not give up.

Q. Did you have a platform in place? On this topic, what are you doing to build a platform and gain readership?

I am a debutant writer, writing in science fiction genre and that too very young. Of course, I did not go to ‘Author meets’ or ‘Literature festivals’ as have been also busy with my studies. I was naïve, still am, with absolutely no connections with the readers beyond my family and friends at school. Slowly, the word has spread, positive reviews have come in and social media has played its part. My participation in the book fairs and reader clubs have been noticed and reader base is increasing.

Q. Favorite novel?

It’s a tie between Amish Tripathi’s ‘Shiva Trilogy’ and Markus Zusak’s ‘The Book Thief’.

Q. Something personal about you people may be surprised to know?

Being a writer of fiction and poetry, most of my friends think that I will pursue my further studies in English or allied courses. But, I am more likely to pursue research in physics after grade 12. Also, another one that might surprise people is that I immensely enjoy the comedy stand ups and heartily laugh over them.

Q. What’s next?

Next few years are very crucial from an education standpoint. It’s that part of my life where I will be preparing for my higher education and at the same time, prioritize my love for writing. A lot of multitasking would be necessary. I am currently working on the sequel and hopefully, it should be out by the end of 2017. I also intend to publish my collection of poems sometime in the near future.
