INTERVIEW:

Q. Characterize yourself in one word?

Eccentric.

Q. Please describe what the story/book is about in one sentence.

Set in the mystical continent of Nyvarda, Arrkaya: Origins narrates the story of a group of young men and women who very soon find themselves thrust into a world of conflict and chaos.

Q. Briefly, what led up to this book? What were you writing (and getting published, if applicable) before breaking out with this book?

To me, writing has always been an extension to reading. When one listens to a song, it is only natural to start humming along. That is how writing was to me.

Ever since I can remember, I have been trying to write something worthwhile. My hard-disk is filled with unfinished manuscripts abandoned when I hit a major roadblock or lost faith in, or as a school-kid when my summer vacations ended.

This time, however, it felt different from the very beginning.

Q. What has been your biggest achievement?

I am actually quite proud of having succeeded in completing the first draft of my manuscript the day before my 21st birthday. That, to me, was quite significant.

Q. Looking back, what did you do right that helped you break in?

While working on Book One, I had a clear goal which had my undivided attention. That, in my opinion, went a long way.

Unfortunately, I have been unable to give Book Two the same sort of attention, largely due to the efforts required to publish and market the book.

Q. Did you have a platform in place? On this topic, what are you doing to build a platform and gain readership?

To be very honest, I never considered factors like platform, when I began writing.

I probably come from the purist school of thought, which mandates that a writer should just write. Everything else should be entrusted to experts in the respective fields. Of course, that is not practical in the current scenario.

Over the past year, I have been interacting readers through various book clubs across the country, and some events we have organized at my alma mater. I have also had the opportunity to meet many fellow writers, and share ideas with them.

Now that Book Two is on the horizon, I am hopeful these efforts will begin bearing fruit.

Q. Favorite novel?

While naming one single book as my favorite would be difficult, I have to say that Adventure of Tom Sawyer, by Mark Twain, had the greatest impact on my life.

Q. Something personal about you people may be surprised to know?

I am a big fan of anime and manga. One can often spot me at Comic Con and several such events across the country.

Q. What’s next?

As I have mentioned multiple times throughout the discussion, I am currently working on Book Two of the series, currently titled Arrkaya: Immortals.

The first draft should be completed in another month or so when the truly grueling task of editing and rewriting can begin.

Q. Future of SALISMANIA.com through your eyes?

Correct me if I am wrong, but you both - Salis Afaque (CEO) & Shafaque Eqbal (Editor-in-Chief) are college students, are you not?

Everything that you have built in such a short time is quite commendable, and one can assume it will only get better, over the years to come, and firmly cement its place as the premier literary magazine in India.
